South Karelia warmly welcomes students, and studies have confirmed that the satisfaction of students here is among the highest in Finland. Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT, and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences are located in the same campus in Skinnarila, and cooperate extensively. Altogether, the educational institutions in the region that include the Lappeenranta University of Technology, the Saimaa University of Technology, Saimaa Vocational College Sampo, and the Army Academy have a total of about 10 900 students. About 900 of them are foreigners. All our higher education institutions are among the country’s most cosmopolitan. . In 2015, LUT was rated first in a survey of foreign university students. The rating was second in the whole of Continental Europe, and eight in the world. In an international university survey, the Lappeenranta University of Technology was ranked among the world’s 300 best universities.
The new strategy of Lappeenranta University of Technology, LUT, aims at solving the world’s most pressing problems: how can a clean water supply be guaranteed to all? How can sustainable energy resources be made possible? How can the world’s waste be responsibly managed and put to use? The strengths of the university include new sustainable development operating models, green growth enterprises, supporting the growth of small and medium-sized companies, knowledge in environmental and energy matters, and knowledge of Russian trade and culture. The university aims at involving the students in the construction of greener and more sustainable future.
It is hoped that the students will increasingly often remain in the region as workers or entrepreneurs. Businesses in the region offer interesting trainee positions and jobs, and support and encouragement is available to starting entrepreneurs.
